At launch, the biggest news about the latest CR-V was Honda's decision not to offer a diesel engine, marking a step away from diesel power more generally. Instead, there was just one petrol engine with two power outputs, and the hybrid CR-V. In another twist, Honda also discontinued the petrol engine from December 2020, so the CR-V range is now hybrid-only.

Honda CR-V MPG & CO2

Company-car drivers were already likely to pick the hybrid but it's something of a shame it's now the only option available, as it won't suit everyone. The front-wheel drive model is the most efficient, managing up to 42.8mpg, with its CO2 emissions figure of 151g/km giving it a mid-range BiK banding. Picking the four-wheel-drive version sees fuel economy fall to 39.2mpg and CO2 emissions increase to 161g/km, placing it in one of the highest BiK bands. This is a bit behind the Hyundai Tucson hybrid, which can manage up to 49.6mpg with CO2 emissions of 127g/km, as well as the Nissan Qashqai e-Power that can return 53.3mpg.

The petrol engine was the same 1.5-litre VTEC turbocharged petrol found in the Honda Civic. Factor in the extra weight, size, four-wheel drive and CVT automatic gearbox fitted in popular versions of the CR-V and fuel efficiency dropped to 31.7-35.3mpg, with CO2 emissions ranging from 178-201g/km. During our testing we found an automatic-equipped petrol CR-V managed 32mpg during average in mixed driving, showing that Honda's figure is accurate if a little disappointing.

Insurance groups

The CR-V starts in insurance group 22 out of 50 in entry-level trim, and increases to group 24 in range-topping EX guise. This could make insurance more costly than for some rivals, with the Skoda Karoq 1.5-litre in group 15 and the Peugeot 3008 spanning groups 11-24.

Warranty

Honda offers a standard three-year/90,000-mile warranty, which owners can choose to extend for an added cost when the car is bought new. This is the same duration as warranties offered with the Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Karoq and Nissan Qashqai, albeit with a 30,000-mile higher cap. Meanwhile, Toyota offers a five-year/100,000-mile warranty for its RAV4 and the Kia Sportage comes with a seven-year warranty.

Servicing

Honda offers fixed-price servicing packages that are likely to cost less than paying for maintenance on a case-by-case basis, so they're well worth considering.
